This is the 5th card in the suit of Pentacles, and it is the card of hardships, poverty, desolation and (financial) loss. In its earlier and hidden meaning, this is the card of spiritual plenty, spiritual rising and inner richness.
In this card we see a predominantly black background indicating Saturnian hardships (such as loss, poverty and hopelessness), we see white snow symbolizing coldness and desolation, and we can see the only bright colors come from a painted glass on a church.
On this painted glass we see 5 pentacles and bright colors that indicate some better times and memories. In front of the church window, there are two figures in rags, looking hunched and poor.
One of the figures is even on the crutches. Both of the figures have dark-green and blue garbs indicating dull (outward) feelings and a lack of earthly possessions. This is the card of deep spiritual richness that is equivalent to the material lack of possessions represented in this card.
5 of Pentacles come up in a reading when the times are rough or are about to get rough (financially). It can also be an omen of addiction or heavy alcoholism caused by the lack of material resources in order to lead a comfortable life.
Adversely, this card point toward an extramarital union or a deeply passionate affair. This is the card of deep spiritual richness, and people who’re under the influence of this card lead extremely spiritual lives.
In some cases, this card can represent leaving your earthly possessions behind and going to live in a monastery or an ashram. Sacrificing your material riches in order to gain spiritual insight and transcendence is a very noble cause and selfless act.
This card can be an omen of the need to donate to the poor, homeless and less blessed than yourself. Stay humble and present in your spiritual path, don’t let yourself get too high and noble thanks to your wealth in order not to lose it all to learn a valuable spiritual lesson. Be kind, always.
When the 5 of Pentacles shows up reversed it can have two meanings, one is a positive material meaning, and the other one is a poor spiritual meaning.
In its reversed (material) state, this card can mean that you will be provided with a powerful turn of events for the better, someone will help you out, take pity on you and you’ll find a saving grace in a hard financial situation. It can also signify finding employment and starting your life anew.
In a spiritual sense, it can signify lacking wisdom and inner richness. This is the card of poverty in its upright position, but spiritual richness; in its reversed position it can indicate that you’re choosing to remain spiritually poor despite the plethora of resources at your disposal. If that is the case – go back to your roots, practice kindness, and be humble and grateful for what you have.
